The Simple Standard

If these principles are integrated into the consciousness of the world’s populations it will take a minimum of thought to realize that the taking of life is a fool’s paradise. Any who advocate it, openly and/or surreptitiously, should be immediately and permanently isolated, their means of doing it kept at the farthest remove. Certainly they should not hold public office. Simple.

I add this — availability of organized armed response to armed violence is a necessity for people if they are to maintain freedom from despots. Who decides its use, and who is a despot, is always being argued. Let that process continue if it must, without nuclear weapons, and with common purpose among the citizenry, informed by history. Securing the democracy we prize has to recognize the risk that it can be hi-jacked in the name of patriotism, indeed has already been. Samuel Johnson: “Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.” That truism does not make every patriot a scoundrel, but as Johnson observed, we know to be watchful.
